Privacy settings

Most social networking websites/apps allow the user to apply privacy settings to control who they share their personal information and experiences with.

The privacy settings available are different for different apps. Internet Matters provides some information about some of the more popular apps (with step-by-step instructions):

The most common privacy setting involves being able to choose who can view your account, either as a “friend” or “follower”. We advise all young people to use this privacy setting, and only to accept “friends” and “followers” who they have real life contact with.  This helps prevent unwanted contact with abusers online, who will often create fake profiles and try to become “friends” with young people to gain their trust.

Young people also benefit from learning how to report problems to app providers, and how to block other users who abuse or otherwise mistreat them.
