Social skills 4

Young adults need to be actively working to broaden their social and support network within their community. Work and study can be a good way of achieving this, as can volunteering locally.

The Mix website has a wide range of information and advice about social issues that affect teenagers and young adults, including:

  • Identity
  • Discrimination
  • Work and study
  • Relationships
  • Crime and safety
  • Loneliness

Online safety continues to be important, and young people should explore the resources at Thinkuknow that are aimed at older young people.

The Thinkuknow resources include advice about healthy personal relationships, but young people might also like to look at the Disrespect Nobody campaign which focuses entirely on healthy relationships and relationship abuse.

Personal safety is very important for young adults, especially when they are beginning to live independently, and travel late in the evening. The Suzy Lamplugh Trust has lots of advice on how to stay safe, and they have also produced a guide to wellbeing and safety for LGBTQ young people:

Young people who are starting to learn to drive can get help with learning towards their theory test from the DVSA website. These resources are excellent for practising test questions.
